Kohala Historical Sites State Monument Description

Kohala Historical Sites State Monument, located in North Kohala, is home to two important historical sites, Mo’okini Heiau and Kamehameha the Great’s birthplace. A National Historic Landmark, Mo’okini is one of the most famous luakini heiau (sacrificial temples) on the island. Oral histories say that the original temple on the site may be 1500 years old. The heiau measures 250 feet x 130 feet with an open stone paved court enclosed by 20 feet high stone walls Kamehameha Akahi ʻAina Hanau, the birthplace of Kamehameha the Great, is a memorial to Hawaiʻi’s greatest king who united all the islan
