Kohala Historical Sites State Monument, located in North Kohala, is home to two important historical sites, Mo’okini Heiau and Kamehameha the Great’s birthplace. A National Historic Landmark, Mo’okini is one of the most famous luakini heiau (sacrificial temples) on the island. Oral histories say that the original temple on the site may be 1500 years old.
